From UFRaw

Jump to: navigation, search

All Nikon DSLR cameras and a few Coolpix digicam can output raw images. All are supported by UFRaw. Correct me if I am wrong.

File format

The raw files are NEF (Nikon Electronic Format). NEF files are TIFF files with some special tags. The main TIFF image is a small thumbnail. Therefore many programs that are not aware of the NEF format recognize these files as TIFF images and show the thumbnail.

Mime type

image/x-nikon-nef

White balance

UFRaw can read the white balance data from all models.

EXIF support

UFRaw can read the EXIF data from NEF files and can write it to JPEG output.

Embedded image

The NEF file includes a full resolution JPEG image. This is the same image which is created as a different file when setting the camera to Raw + basic JPEG mode.

Special features

The user can set a tone curve in camera. UFRaw knows how to read this curve and applies it to the image. UFRaw can all read the NTC (Nikon Tone Curve) files.

Anomalous cameras

The Nikon D1X is a very unique camera since its sensor cells are not square but 2 by 1 rectangles. This requires some tailored code in UFRaw that doesn't get tested as much as the regular code.

The Nikon Coolpix 5700 has CYGM (Cyan, Yellow, Green, Magenta) CCD color filter instead of the standard RGGB filter.
