Canon
From UFRaw
Canon dSLR and some compact's can output RAW image files. There are two: CRW and CR2. All should be supported by UFRaw.
Contents |
File format
The raw files are CRW and CR2 (Canon RAW and Canon RAW 2nd Edition). The newer CR2 format was first used by the EOS 1D mkII (annouced in January 2004), newer DSLRs use this format, e.g. 1Ds mk II, 5D, 20D and 30D. Some PowerShot-models support crw with a hacked firmware (not supported by Canon, use at your own risk).
Mime type
image/x-canon-crw or image/x-canon-cr2
White balance
UFRaw can read the white balance data from all models.
EXIF support
UFRaw can read the EXIF data from CRW and CR2 files and can write it to JPEG output.
Embedded image
CRW and CR2 usually include a lower resolution (e.g. 20D raw: 3522x2348 and embedded-jpg: 1536x1024) JPEG image.
Special features
Beginning with the Canon EOS-1D Mark III in February 2007 Canon-DSLRs support RAW and sRAW. sRAW is just smaller and usefull for eg Newspaper photographers. In case of the EOS-1D Mark III the size is 3888 x 2592 (cr2) for conventional RAW and 1936 x 1288 (cr2) for sRAW. Beginning with the release of the EOS 40D and EOS-1Ds Mark III in August cr2 files changed from 12 to 14 bit.
Anomalous cameras
Between 1995 and 2000 Canon sold four Kodak based EOS dSLR cameras (EOS DCS3, EOS DCS1, EOS D2000/Kodak DCS520 and EOS D6000/Kodak DCS560). The EOS D2000 is supported. Like the D6000 it stores files as tif which can be converted to cr2 by Canons "CR2 converter" which is available for Windows (2000 and XP) and Mac from Canon. Ufraw can directly open D2000 and DCS1 tif files. Support for other cameras mentioned above as anomalous has not been tested due to a lack of samples.
The EOS 20Da is a specialized version of the 20D, suited to astrophotography and infrared photpgraphy. Raw-support might work with UFraw, as the camera is nearly identical and the CR2 should be identical (just guessing here).
